Axiata Inspires Malaysians This Merdeka with Tales of Tunku’s Compassion

KUALA LUMPUR - To promote the spirit of unity and patriotism in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations, Axiata Group Berhad (“Axiata”) will launch a 2-week campaign titled, “True Stories of Tunku” on 28 August 2020.

Featuring first-hand eyewitness accounts of the legendary acts of compassion by the nation’s first Prime Minister, Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the stories will be narrated from the memories of Malaysians whose lives he touched.

This year, Axiata is revisiting the timeless values of Tunku following the highly successful “Getaran Pertama” integrated campaign which was rolled out in conjunction with last year’s Merdeka celebrations. To recap, last year’s campaign featured a heartwarming story about a multiracial choir arranged by Tunku to perform the Negaraku for the first time in heralding the birth of our nation.

For this year’s campaign, among those whose real stories will be turned into inspiring dramatisations are Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Malaysia's longest-serving parliamentarian; 93-year-old educator and social activist, Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan; one of Masjid Negara's original architects, Dato' Baharuddin Abu Kassim; and Tunku's personal cook and butler, Puan Salmiah Mohd Isa and Encik K. Muthu a/l Kalimuthoo, respectively.

Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim

President & Group Chief Executive Officer of Axiata Group Berhad

At a time when we are nostalgic about the birth of Malaysia, it feels right to pay tribute once again to our nation’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and his exemplary legacy of values.

This year, as humanity is tested by the unimaginable force of the COVID-19 pandemic, as we lived through unprecedented movement controls and witnessed really daunting crisis situations across the globe, our ability to empathise with others and respond with kindness has been brought to the fore.

Compassion is integral to human existence and as can be seen through Tunku’s actions, it is what makes us human. Whether you were young or old, no matter how humble your background was, no matter what your race or religion was, Tunku was there for you, if you were in need. Ready to reach out a helping hand. If all Malaysians take this same spirit of compassion into our hearts, then we, as a nation, can truly face the future with unity and confidence.

Tunku Abdul Rahman once remarked, 'We are one team, working together with common purpose to do our level best for the benefit and betterment of our country and our people.

Indeed, the past, in this case, truly illuminates the way forward. May his timeless compassion inspire us all to work together, collaborate more, and support each other for a better tomorrow.

Dato' Izzaddin Idris

Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer of Axiata Group Berhad
