Environmental management is a key component of our broader sustainability agenda. Through responsible stewardship of natural resources — including water conservation, biodiversity protection, and waste reduction — we not only lessen our environmental impact but also mitigate regulatory risks and generate long-term cost efficiencies.
Effective waste management is central to reducing our environmental footprint, limiting landfill contributions, and cutting emissions — while also minimising negative impacts on surrounding communities.
We focus on waste reduction, recycling, and e-waste management, and actively collaborate with suppliers to curb waste generation throughout the procurement process. In 2024, we began systematically monitoring waste-related metrics across our operations, supported by enhanced alignment and consistency in reporting practices. These efforts are reinforced through regular discussions at the Sustainability Steering Committee and Board Sustainability Committee meetings.
Total Waste (Tonnes)

While we operate in a low water-intensive industry, we recognise the importance of driving efficient water use in our workplaces.
Having begun the tracking of water consumption the year prior, we expanded our water consumption reporting coverage in 2024 to include all OpCos, excluding ADA, while Boost reports on its Malaysia office. We plan to expand reporting to include all OpCos and their subsidiaries in the future
Total Water (Million Litre)

Note: 1 The FY2023 value has been restated from 501.6 million litres to 350.8 million litres due to misreporting by one of the OpCos
We actively promote the use of digital solutions to support conservation efforts and strategies aimed at mitigating biodiversity loss. A key example of this is EDOTCO’s initiative to protect endangered bird species nesting on its towers. This is reinforced through dedicated policies that safeguard nests, raise awareness, and require biodiversity assessments prior to tower construction.
Ongoing monitoring has shown a significant increase in eagle populations inhabiting EDOTCO’s towers — rising from 21 in 2021 to 52 in 2024. In addition, EDOTCO contributed further to biodiversity enhancement in 2024 by organising coastal clean-ups in Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, as well as planting mangroves and corals to help restore critical ecosystems in Indonesia.
In 2024, we introduced our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy, reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility and a strong health and safety culture. In addition, several OpCos, including Dialog and EDOTCO, adopted environmental policies, committing to achieving compliance beyond regulatory requirements.
Organised two Sustainability Weeks and a Waste Management Race, engaging employees in sustainable practices and circular economy principles
(XL Axiata is known as XLSMART since 16 April 2025)
Conducted 11 awareness sessions to educate employees and stakeholders on environmental challenges, sustainability practices and eco-friendly operations
Supported post-flood ecological recovery by providing aid to affected farmers, planting trees in schools and piloting reforestation at Base Transceiver Station sites, while recycling 15.5 tonnes of waste, including e-waste
Undertook a variety of initiatives, including collaborating with government authorities in creating guidelines for eco-schools and eco-pagodas, launching an internal waste separation and plastic recycling project, and contributing to tree planting, biodiversity conservation and climate action in partnership with Cambodia’s Ministry of Education
Conducted four workshops throughout the year for top suppliers across National Tower Companies (NTCs) on occupational health and safety, business continuity management, integrity, cyber security and sustainability
