KUALA LUMPUR – Nik Rizal Kamil, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Axiata Group Berhad ("Axiata" or "the Group"), has been appointed to the Board of the GSMA for a two-year term commencing January 2027.

The GSMA is a global organisation representing mobile operators and companies across the digital ecosystem. It convenes industry leaders, policymakers and technology partners to advance digital inclusion, spectrum access, modern regulation, privacy, sustainability and innovation. Through its advocacy, policy leadership and global platforms, including MWC and M360, the GSMA helps shape the future of mobile connectivity and digital transformation.

The GSMA Board comprises leaders from some of the world’s largest telecommunications groups and independent operators. It provides strategic direction on key industry priorities and helps shape the future of mobile connectivity.

Nik Rizal’s appointment reinforces Axiata’s longstanding leadership in the global mobile industry and continues the Group’s legacy of contributing to the GSMA’s leadership and agenda. It reflects Axiata’s role in advancing the industry’s investment and financial sustainability, advocating for its priorities across markets, accelerating innovation, and evolving digital connectivity as a critical enabler of digital economies and AI-ready societies and businesses.

Beyond its representation on the GSMA Board, Axiata’s senior management contributes actively to GSMA board-level committees, working groups and task forces, bringing ASEAN and South Asian perspectives to key industry discussions and initiatives.

Nik Rizal Kamil

Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Axiata

I am honoured to serve on the GSMA Board at a pivotal time for our industry. Mobile connectivity has evolved from a communications service into a powerful driver of economic growth, digital inclusion and innovation. As 5G, AI, cloud and next-generation technologies reshape industries and societies, our challenge is not only to expand connectivity, but also to translate it into sustainable growth, greater resilience and long-term value.

Across ASEAN and South Asia, Axiata has seen first-hand how technology and connectivity can accelerate development, empower businesses and improve lives. As our industry moves towards AI-enabled services, intelligent networks, digital platforms and stronger public-private collaboration, the mobile ecosystem will become even more important to inclusive growth and digital transformation. I look forward to working with fellow Board members to advance policies, partnerships and innovation that strengthen the ecosystem, build trust and resilience, and ensure the benefits of technology are shared broadly, securely and sustainably.
