Axiata Leads Group Wide Effort to Help Earthquake Victims in Padang, Sumatra
KUALA LUMPUR, Wednesday October 7 2009 - Axiata Group Berhad has spearheaded group wide relief efforts via its subsidiaries in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, to help those affected by the devastating earthquake in Sumatra last Wednesday. Efforts include a donation by Axiata Group and a coordinated group wide SMS campaign in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Dato' Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Axiata said “Our thoughts are with the people in Padang who have seen such devastation, losing homes and loved ones. Our efforts are just a small contribution as caring corporate citizens to the huge amount of work that needs to be done to rehabilitate survivors. We have had a long history in Indonesia, with our operations in PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk (XL), and we are committed to help our neighbour in this their time of need”
In Malaysia Axiata is collaborating with Media Prima and its Tabung Bencana NSTP-Media Prima Fund. Axiata Group has donated RM200, 000 towards the fund for earthquake victims in Padang, Sumatra. Axiata's Subsidiary Celcom is also driving an immediate SMS donation drive to create awareness and humanitarian involvement within its customer base of over 9 million.
In Indonesia Axiata's subsidiary XL, has been at the forefront of relief efforts in Sumatra from the offset, providing free phone access and XL services in the afflicted areas as well as free SMSs for customers of West Sumatra. XL's network continues to be safeguarded so that it can continue to serve its subscribers and society in general. Alongside this XL has started an SMS campaign to raise funds for the victims. Concurrently in Singapore, Axiata's affiliate M1 has also launched an SMS drive for Padang relief efforts.
To make an SMS donation Celcom's Postpaid and Prepaid customers need to simply typeDERMA and send it to21999. Each SMS is worth RM1, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Tabung Bencana NSTP collection. The donation drive will last for one month, beginning from 7 October 2009 to 7 November 2009. Celcom will also be launching a separate initiative, throughCelcom Sukses, its prepaid segment for Indonesian citizens and workers residing in Malaysia, details of which will be announced later.

Through this donation drive we will be bringing people together, to better aid our neighboring country," he continued.
“As an Asian company we feel a big responsibility to our close neighbour. We need to go all out to create awareness about the fund to raise as much money as possible to help those affected by the earthquake. We urge the public here and elsewhere in South-East Asia to step up and help the people of Padang,” Dato' Sri Jamaludin concluded.
